Law could extend solar power use to condos and townhouses
Friday, 27 June 2008
Ewa townhouse owner Matthew Calloni didn't realize that installing a solar panel on the roof of his garage would create pandemonium. He wanted to install solar water heating to save energy costs and help the environment. Little did he know he would become embroiled in a legal tussle with his owners' association over the panel that would take more than a year to resolve. A new law passed by the Legislature this year could pave a smoother road to solar installations for townhouse/town home owners such as Calloni. linkback House Bill 1017, introduced by Rep. Hermina Morita, D-Kapaa-Hanalei, allows owners of single-family residential dwellings and townhouses to install solar energy devices without prior board approval.
